Kariba Uranium-Coal project, Zimbabwe

African Energy made applications in 2005 for six Special Grant licences for uranium in Zimbabwe, covering known uranium prospects on the southern side of the Kariba Valley. The six applications (SG12/05 Mapamba, SG17/05 Sinamatella 1, SG19/05 Sinamatella 2, SG20/05 Sebungwe, SG39/05 Tenchiwende and SG40/05 Chirundu) cover a total area of 4,138 sq km.

In January 2006, four of these applications were recommended for Ministerial Approval by the Mining Affairs Board of Zimbabwe, but to date the licences have not been granted. The remaining two licence applications (SG39/05 and SG40/05) are yet to be reviewed by the Mining Affairs Board. Given the current uncertainty relating to the amendment of the Mines and Minerals Act Chapter 21:05, it is not clear when these licences will be granted, nor under what commercial terms. No work is planned on this project by African Energy until this position is clarified and licences have been granted under satisfactory terms and conditions.
